Tantric Bodywork: Seven Signals from Your Body and the First Three Often Overlooked

Graphic with the text "The body remembers. It’s time to listen to it," featuring a massage scene

Your body speaks to you every single day. It speaks through pain that has no diagnosis. Through fatigue that doesn’t go away even after sleep. Through the strange sensation that you are living alongside yourself, rather than within yourself. The problem is that most of us have learned not to listen.

In a culture that glorifies productivity and mocks "weakness," it is easy to mask the body’s signals with another cup of coffee, a painkiller, or simply the expectation that "it will go away on its own." Often, however, it does not go away. It grows. It accumulates in layers of tension, numbness, and exhaustion—waiting for someone to finally be willing to listen.

Tantra therapy provides a space where true listening becomes possible. It is neither a spiritual practice reserved for a select few, nor—contrary to what popular culture often suggests—a sexual practice. Rather, it is a form of deep somatic work—engaging with the body, breath, and energy—that helps to release what has become constricted and to reconnect with what has been forgotten.

In this article, we outline seven signals the body sends when it is in need of such work. Today, we will examine the first three.

Signal 1: Chronic tension and pain with no identifiable medical cause

You have visited an orthopedist and undergone an MRI scan. The doctor says "everything is fine." Yet, you continue to experience a stiff neck, lower back pain, a clenched jaw, or a heaviness in your chest that prevents you from taking a full, deep breath.

This is one of the most common reasons people seek out tantra therapy—and yet, it is also one of the most overlooked.

The body as an archive of emotions

For a long time, Western medicine treated the body and the psyche as separate systems. Today, thanks to the research of figures such as Bessel van der Kolk (author of *The Body Keeps the Score*) and Peter Levine (creator of Somatic Experiencing), we know that this view is mistaken. The body and the psyche are, in fact, a single, inseparable system. Every emotional experience that is not fully processed remains encoded in the muscles, fascia, and nervous system.

If, as a child, you learned that anger was "bad," you might have tightened your jaw and abdomen to keep from expressing it. If you experienced a loss or trauma with no one to share your tears with, your chest may have constricted. If you spent years suppressing stress at work, your shoulders might have risen toward your ears—and stayed there.

None of these tensions are "errors" of the body. They are intelligent, protective responses to situations that the psyche could not handle in any other way. The problem arises when these tensions persist for years—long after the original situation has passed.

What are "character armors"?

Wilhelm Reich—a pioneer of somatic psychology—described this phenomenon as "character armors": chronic patterns of muscular tension that literally "hold" suppressed emotions and energy. He identified seven zones where such tension most frequently accumulates: the areas around the eyes, mouth, neck, chest, diaphragm, abdomen, and pelvis.

If you notice that one of these areas is constantly tense, it is no coincidence. It is an encoded story—one that your body is waiting for someone to help it tell, so that it can finally let go.

How can Tantra therapy help?

A Tantric therapy session combines breathwork, conscious touch, and the therapist’s mindful presence. Within this safe space, the body can begin to release tensions that have, for years, served to protect the psyche. Clients often describe it this way: "I was crying, but I didn't know why. And suddenly, I felt lighter."

This is the release of somatic tension—not by analyzing it in the mind, but by allowing the body to complete a process that was once interrupted.

Sign 2 — Disconnection from one’s own body and sensations

You are sitting in a chair, and someone asks, "How are you feeling?" You pause for a moment and reply, "Fine." But, in truth, you aren't really sure. Because to answer honestly, you would have to look inward—and all you find there is silence, a fog, or a void. It is as if you are trying to feel something that simply… isn't there.

Disconnection from the body—referred to in somatic psychology as somatic dissociation or de-interoception—is one of the most common consequences of long-term stress, trauma, and living "in one's head."

When the body becomes a stranger

We live in a culture that rewards intellect and productivity. From childhood, we are taught that what matters is what we do and what we think—not what we feel. School, work, social media—everything draws attention away from the body’s interior toward the outside: toward results, appearance, comparisons, and taking action.

The result? After years, many of us literally stop knowing what we are feeling. This is not about emotional inhibition in a psychiatric sense; rather, it means that sensory experiences from within the body—warmth, tension, pulsation, pleasure, discomfort—no longer reach our conscious awareness. We operate on autopilot.

Characteristic signs of this state include:

Difficulty describing what you are feeling (both physically and emotionally)

A sense that you are observing your own life from the outside, as if you were a spectator

A lack of pleasure from things that once brought it—including touch, intimacy, food, or movement

A feeling that you are “living from the neck up”

Difficulty relaxing—even while on vacation, your mind continues to run at full speed

Dissociation as a protective mechanism

It is important to understand: becoming disconnected from your body is not a flaw or a weakness. It is an intelligent survival strategy. When reality became too painful—emotionally, relationally, or sometimes physically—your nervous system learned to step away from it. You “left your body” so that what was happening wouldn’t hurt quite as much.

The problem is that, over time, this withdrawal becomes your default mode of functioning. And at that point, you can no longer "step out" when a threat arises—because you are no longer truly present within yourself on a daily basis.

Interoception — returning to oneself

The key to reversing this process is rebuilding interoception—the ability to perceive signals from within the body. Neurological research shows that interoception is closely linked to one’s sense of self, emotional regulation, and even the capacity for empathy.

Tantric therapy works directly with this dimension. Through conscious, therapeutic touch and by guiding attention toward specific areas of the body, the therapist helps the client literally "move back into" their own body. We learn to feel the warmth of a hand, the pulsing of blood, the breath expanding the ribcage—small, vivid sensations that confirm: I am here; I am within myself.

For many, the first session of Tantric therapy is the first moment in years that they have truly felt their body—not as a "vessel for getting tasks done," but as a living, intelligent part of who they are.

Signal 3 — Lack of vital energy and chronic fatigue

You sleep for eight hours, yet wake up tired. Coffee helps for an hour. You spend the weekend resting, only to find yourself just as exhausted on Monday as you were on Friday. Your doctor says your test results are within the normal range. Yet, you know something is wrong—because you remember a time when you would wake up in the morning ready to take on the day. And you would like to get it back.

Chronic fatigue with no identifiable medical cause is one of the most serious—yet frequently overlooked—signs that your body and nervous system are overloaded at a level deeper than mere physical exhaustion.

Energy in the Tantric sense: *prāṇa* and vitality

In Tantric philosophy, as well as in Ayurvedic and yogic traditions, life energy is known as *prāṇa* (in Sanskrit)—or *chi/qi* in Chinese traditions. This is not merely a metaphorical concept; a growing body of research in neurobiology and biophysics points to real, physiological correlates for what ancient traditions termed "life energy"—such as nervous system tone, blood and lymph flow, mitochondrial activity, and the state of the fascia and muscles.

When *prāṇa* flows freely, we experience vitality, joy, motivation, and the capacity to engage fully with life. When it becomes blocked—due to tension, stress, suppressed emotions, or dysregulated breathing—we experience exactly what was described above: persistent fatigue, apathy, and a lack of drive.

Where do energy blockages come from?

Energy blockages have very specific, physiological causes:

Compensatory breathing. Most people living under chronic stress breathe shallowly—using only the upper part of their chest. The diaphragm, which should be the primary respiratory muscle, is tense and blocked. The result: the body is constantly slightly oxygen-deprived, the nervous system remains in a state of alertness, and every cell operates in an "energy-saving" mode.

Chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system. When we are constantly in "fight-or-flight" mode—even if the threat is merely emotional (an email from a boss, an argument in a relationship, anxiety about the future)—the body continuously produces cortisol and adrenaline. This consumes vast amounts of energy. After months or years of functioning this way, one’s reserves become depleted.

Blockage of the sexual center and the pelvic region. In Tantric philosophy, the pelvis is the source of fundamental life energy—the same energy that fuels not only sexuality but also creativity, passion, the will to live, and the capacity for joy. Chronic tension in this area (often the result of shame, sexual trauma, or a strict upbringing) literally cuts off access to this reservoir of energy.

How does Tantric therapy restore vitality?

Therapeutic work within the Tantric approach operates on multiple levels:

First and foremost, through breathwork—breathing techniques used during sessions (such as diaphragm-expanding breath or wave-like breathing) gradually teach the body how to return to deep, uninhibited breathing. After just a few sessions, many people notice a significant improvement in the quality of their sleep and their energy levels throughout the day.

Furthermore, by releasing tensions that obstruct the flow—conscious touch, which includes work on the pelvis, diaphragm, chest, and spine, helps to restore the free movement of energy throughout the body. Clients often describe this as a feeling of "unblocking" or a "warm wave" flowing through their body—sometimes for the first time in years.

Finally, through the regulation of the nervous system—the safe, attentive space of a therapeutic session acts as a signal to the nervous system that it is okay to pause, to trust, and to let go of a state of constant alertness. Regular sessions gradually shift the balance of the autonomic nervous system away from sympathetic dominance (stress) and toward the parasympathetic state (regeneration, calm, and openness).

The long-term effect? Clients at Studio Dewi describe it this way: "After three months of work, I felt like I had an appetite for things again. Like life finally has flavor once more."

Your body knows. It’s time to start listening.

The three signs mentioned above—chronic pain without a clear diagnosis, feeling disconnected from oneself, and profound energetic exhaustion—often appear together. This is because they share common roots: an excess of stress, suppressed emotions, and living in "survival mode" rather than truly living.

Tantric therapy is not a magic fix. It requires the courage to look inward, patience throughout the process, and an openness to connecting with your own body. Yet, for many, it serves as the first space where they truly feel that someone—and something—is listening.

If you recognize any of these signs in yourself, we invite you to visit Studio Dewi in Kraków.

In the next part of this article, we describe the remaining four signs: difficulties with intimacy and closeness, emotional numbing, recurring destructive patterns in relationships, and a loss of connection to joy and sensuality. Stay tuned.
